The 10-minute winter battery checklist

Close-up of a car battery with jumper cables attached

Cold is a battery's worst enemy: capacity drops while the engine demands more to start. These five checks take ten minutes and prevent the majority of winter no-starts we see.

1. Read the battery's age

Find the date sticker. Past four years old? Get a free load test before the first freeze — most parts stores do it in minutes.

2. Clean the terminals

White or green crust on terminals chokes current. Disconnect (negative first), scrub with a wire brush, reconnect snugly.

3. Tighten everything

A cable you can wiggle by hand is a future breakdown. Snug both terminals and confirm the hold-down clamp is firm.

4. Check resting voltage

A $15 multimeter should read 12.4–12.7V with the car off. Below 12.2V after sitting overnight means charge or replace soon.

5. Short trips need help

Winter short hops never recharge what starting consumed. Once a week, take a 20-minute drive — or keep a trickle charger on the battery.
